Next Stop: Chicago

The Dept. of Education is holding the second of four public hearings on Thursday, October 5th, at Loyola University in Chicago. At the first hearing, the overwhelming majority of speakers, including more than 25 students, spoke in support of our Five Point Plan for Fair Loan Payments.

Help keep the momentum going! This is your chance to speak to the people who can fix the broken student loan repayment system. We encourage you to participate in a hearing near you (Chicago 10/5; Orlando 11/2; D.C. 11/8).

If you can’t make it to a hearing, send a message to the Department.
See the full testimony of Robert Shireman, Executive Director of the Project on Student Debt, at the Department's September 19 hearing in Berkeley, CA.

Simplifying the FAFSA

While Shireman was testifying in Berkeley, Associate Director Lauren Asher was testifying in Washington before the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance. Her comments focused on simplifying the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by using information the government already has. In a recent statement, Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings expressed interest in doing just that.
