Momentum Grows for the Five Point PlanSupport for the Five Point Plan for Fair Loan Payments keeps growing! The list now includes three state commissioners of higher education, the NAACP, MALDEF, a former Princeton president, and many more.
There’s one week left to tell the Department of Education to include loan reforms in its negotiated rulemaking. Calls for fair loan payments dominated the first two public hearings, and more students and borrowers will make the case in Orlando this Thursday (11/2) and D.C next Wednesday (11/8). The deadline for public comments is Thursday 11/9. If you can testify at a hearing, or if you haven’t yet sent an email, use your voice and tell the Department to make student loans fair and manageable. New Resources for BorrowersThe Project has developed two new resources to help consumers make wise borrowing decisions. Comparing Student Loan Discounts clarifies the real value of common incentives and discounts offered by lenders. Questions to Ask About Private Loans helps prospective borrowers understand the terms and risks of private loans. New Data AvailableThe Economic Diversity of Colleges web site has been completely updated with the best and most recent data available (2004-05). The web site now has over 200 variables for over 3,000+ colleges and universities, including information on Pell grants, Stafford loans, and graduation rates. Shireman in College Board Trends Coverage
The New York Times, USA Today, and the San Francisco Chronicle featured comments from the Project's Robert Shireman in stories about the College Board’s latest reports on costs and aid and the alarming growth in private loans.
