I graduated with a bachelors degree in communication studies in 1998.
My parents never went to a university, and I really had no idea about how student loans worked, and why. I had no idea about the importance of choosing a specific major.
All my parents told me is “you have to go to college, it’s important so you can get a good job”.... (read more ›)

Like many students, federal aid did not cover the full cost of tuition for graduate school. To make up the difference, I had to take out a private education loan. Although my interest rate is good, the overall amount of the loan coupled with the federal aid has left me with over $100,000 in debt.
I have been fortunate to land a decent job;... (read more ›)

I'm Surviving but barley. I've already attended college and have been left in a horrible position by a Private loan with a variable interest rate. I need help I've consolidated what the loan company would allow but they are of no help in any way towards gaining the peace of mind of a fixed rate on the about $50,000.00 loan I was signed up for. I... (read more ›)

I have been paying my students loans since about 1997, a year after I graduated from college. Its been over 13 years and my student loan debt is still the same! In fact, it is about $2000+ more than before! How is this possible? I've been paying close over $200 every month and I still see no progress. I tried to lower my high interest... (read more ›)

I was fortunate to only need to take out a small amount of federal loans to cover the cost of my undergraduate education. My husband, however, was not so fortunate. He accumulated over $30,000 in undergraduate.
We both went to graduate school, putting us both in about $40,000 more in debt each.
My husband owes well over $70,000 in... (read more ›)

I finally had to break down and get a car, so now as a single women have car payments, house payments, food, gas, utilities and student loan. My student loan right now is $90.00. I started college in 1990 at the age of 45. I got an AA degree (1992), a BA degree (1994), and a MA degree (1998). I finished college at age 53. I left owing about $62,000. I now owe $133,000. I pay $150 every month - not the amount they want - the amount I can afford. My credit rating is terrible even though I pay all my bills on time... (read more ›)

When I entered college I was sold a lot of stories about how it was ok to take out loans every year because I would get a job that would pay them off. The only problem was that I was attending a private school that cost over $40,000 per year. I met my husband there and after we finished our undergraduate work, we went on to master's degree... First I got an BA in Art which was about as useful as a puddle of warm spit in the job market in the 1990s. It was the era of a certain impeached governor in CA and he cut all art programs and all state jobs that required art degrees. So, I went back to school a second time at a private University in Oregon to do the pre-reqs for an Optometry... (read more ›)

My story
I grew up in extreme poverty. My Dad was ¼ Native American, part Dakota Sioux part Cherokee. He couldn’t find work easily because he was illiterate. His father would not allow him to go to school. This was white man’s ways, and just was not allowed. This was before food stamps, so my 2 sister’s and I went to bed too often so... (read more ›)
