I was attending Brookhaven Community College on grants for about three years. The Court Reporting Institute of Dallas caught my attention.
I went for an interview with a recruiter. I was lead to believe it takes 2 1/2 years to get out of the school. I guess I should have read up on it.
At an open house, my mom asked, "what the average... (read more ›)

I took a $15,000 pay cut and have over 40,000 in federal and private loans to change careers and become a School Counselor. Without professional grade pay in schools and being ineligible for the teacher student loan forgiveness after serving in a high-need district for 5 years... I do not know how long I can handle the financial stress of not... (read more ›)

Back in 2003/2004 I received a letter from TERI that stated I qualified for a private loan for college. After reading over the letter I applied for the loan and was accepted. I did not really think much about the long term effects at the time. For the next 3 semesters TERI continued to offer the loans through various marketing materials.... (read more ›)

I returned to school at the age of 35 to obtain my bachelors degree. I had only attended a technical school when I was in my early 20's, so the college experience was new and scary to me. It has definitely been tough (not academically, but financially) I do know that without being able to get student loans, it would be even tougher. I am still... (read more ›)

After many years, I was fortunate to gain entrance into Graduate School under the Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Project. I graduated in June 2007, and began to look for employment in the public sector child welfare agencies to fulfill my obligation. After many job interviews and applications, the economy in California took a downfall, and... (read more ›)

As a single mother, I had to borrow to pay my way through school. Upon completion of my graduate degree, I was faced with serious medical problems. I had to undergo several surgeries, and was out of work. I am still facing more treatment. I would log on to my lender's web page, have a minimal amount due, pay it, then find out the next day that... (read more ›)

When news of IBR started I was quite excited. I graduated in 1996 and am still paying on my loans. They were consolidated with Sallie Mae soon after my graduation with 9% interest. Since I consolidated I do not qualify for the lower interest rate that has been available for several years. Also, I found out last week consolidated loans do... (read more ›)

There are many ironies in my story-the greatest of which is that I tried to follow the American dream and better myself through education. I earned my Master's degree in History at Sonoma State U. in Northern California (my BA is in Broadcasting from SFSU). It took four years to write my thesis because I picked a difficult topic (examining the... (read more ›)

I worked for a small school district in Arizona as technical support for an elementary school. My initial duties were to update, upgrade all machines on the campus (200+ computers running OS 6.8 to 8.6) make printers available to them, repair and maintain the thinnet network, update and maintain the server for the student data and teacher data,... I was very young with four children and I wanted to get an education after quitting high school to better support my family. I went to a school for medical careers to be a Medical Assistant and they just quickly talked me into signing up and never told me what kind of loan I was getting myself into-Stafford Loan.
Well, my mother had to... (read more ›)
